Hannaford Data Breach

Important Announcement to our Debit Card Holders

On March 17, 2008, Hannaford Supermarkets announced that a data intrusion into its computer network had occurred which has potentially exposed debit and credit card transaction information. This breach includes data from all Hannaford stores throughout New England and New York, and their subsidiary Sweetbay stores in Florida.

What are the facts known to date?

The only information identified at risk is debit or credit card account information contained on the card's magnetic stripe. No personal information, such as date of birth, Social Security number, or checking account information is contained on this stripe.

It is unknown how many accounts have actually been compromised. The notices from Visa and MasterCard list all accounts that were utilized at Hannaford stores during the time period of the intrusion. While these accounts may be at risk, there is no confirmation that they were stolen or are being fraudulently used.

What is Bangor Savings Bank doing to protect our customers?

Bangor Savings Bank has not identified any suspicious activity to date that indicates our accounts are being misused.

We have notified our debit card provider of the card numbers that are potentially impacted. Through this service provider, we utilize fraud detection software and sophisticated review criteria to detect unusual patterns and stop fraud.

What should you do to protect yourself?

Monitor the activity on the account connected to your Bangor Savings Bank debit card, using the following options in addition to your monthly statements:

  • Bangor Online: Log on and check account transactions on a regular basis. This is a good habit to have under any circumstances. If you are not currently enrolled in Bangor Online, sign up today! It's convenient, accessible 24/7, and free.
  • 24-Hour PhoneBanking at 1.866.263.3099: Available around the clock, this service is great for those that are not online users. Enrollment is easy and happens during the first call.

Additionally, any of the staff at our 51 Branches statewide or our Customer Service Center can assist with inquiries or questions. The Customer Service Center can be reached from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 1-877-Bangor1 (226.4671)

Most importantly, customers are not responsible for unauthorized activity that occurs on their debit cards. However, if you prefer to close your existing debit card and have a new card issued, please contact your local branch or our Customer Service Center to initiate that action.

We want to reassure you that we are fully aware of the situation and are monitoring it very closely. Additional information on this incident will be posted to this page and more information is also available on Hannaford's site. We will keep you candidly informed of the progress in this case. Thank you.
