FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS AN EMV CARD?

Also referred to as a "chip" or "smart" card, an EMV card is a debit or credit card that has a microchip embedded in the card itself. The microchip is another layer of security for card holders when conducting point-of-sale transactions. They do not provide any additional security for e-Commerce or over the phone transactions

ARE EMV CARDS MORE SECURE THAN A TRADITIONAL CARD?

Yes! Magnetic stripes on a traditional card contain static data. This makes it easier for criminals who steal the data to profit from fraud. An EMV card is different due to the fact that the microchip will generate a unique transaction code for every payment made. The code that is generated cannot be used again, even if compromised.

WILL EMV AND NFC CARDS STOP DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD FRAUD?

EMV and NFC cards will not be able to stop all fraud; however they will significantly help with the prevention of card fraud at the point-of-sale. The unique code that the EMV and NFC cards generate makes it much more difficult for criminals to duplicate the card’s sensitive information.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A MERCHANT DOESN'T HAVE AN EMV OR NFC FRIENDLY TERMINAL?

No need to worry! If a merchant is not EMV or NFC enabled all you need to do is swipe the magnetic stripe on the card, just like you do today.

HOW DO I USE MY EMV CARD?

There are two ways that you can use your EMV card. If the merchant does not have an EMV terminal you may swipe the magnetic stripe as if you are using a traditional card. At locations that are EMV enabled you will insert the chip face-up in the terminal, and leave it there until instructed to remove it.

WHAT IS AN NFC CARD?

NFC stands for near field communication. An NFC enabled card allows for the user to perform a "contactless" payment method via electromagnetic radio fields between the card and enabled terminal.

WHAT IS THE SECURITY LIKE ON AN NFC CARD?

The security on an NFC card is similar to that of an EMV card. The NFC card will transmit the unique code for each EMV transaction initiated by the card. Like the EMV card, the generated code from the chip cannot be used again.

HOW DO I USE MY NFC CARD?

First you must be at an NFC enabled merchant terminal. Place or "tap" your card within close proximity of the POS terminal. Following the "tap" you may be asked to sign or enter your PIN to complete the transaction.
